Addressing the unmet promise of virtual care

During the pandemic, the convenience and safety of virtual health care made it a widespread necessity, and many employers responded by offering virtual care programs. The year 2020, when the CDC reported a 154% increase in telehealth appointments, marked a major shift towards normalizing virtual health. Rural employees with in-home access to broadband internet have especially benefited from the new virtual options.

However, as of December 2022, many of the promises of virtual health care remain unmet. The availability of newer, virtual options has not led to a paradigmatic shift in consumer preferences, as most employees continue to prioritize in-person care.
